Member's bio: Rachel Kalpana James
Rachel Kalpana James is a graduate of Carleton University (1984) and OCAD (1993). Before moving to Ottawa, Rachel worked in Toronto to support culturally diverse artists, most notably as Co-Coordinator of the Desh Pardesh Festival (1994), and as a founder and Director (2000-2007) of the artist-run centre, SAVAC.
Rachel’s art practice is inspired by her South Asian heritage, immigrant history and love of books. She has worked in bookmaking, photography, video, print, installation and performance to explore epistemological questions in relation to the construction of identity and belonging. Tagore and Mrs. E. (2000), a site-specific intervention at the Art Gallery of Ontario, is featured in Museums After Modernism edited by Pollock and Zemans (2006). And her multimedia installation I Know You, Louise Boothe (2004) was a featured exhibition in CONTACT, and an artist project in FUSE magazine.
